Search engine optimization has been revered as something only the experts can do well, or you have to buy a $2000 course or something of the like, to figure it out.
I disagree. I believe (and I have a number of web pages in top ten rankings in the search engines, several #1 spots, and many, many articles with links to me in the top ten and the top ten rankings for certain keywords) that you can learn just about everything you need to know to go to the top ten spot in the major search engines in the confines of this article, and its twin, Search Engine Optimization All You Need to Know About On-Page Optimization.
So now you know that I believe there are only 2 areas of search engine optimization on-page and off-page optimization. This article is about off-page search engine optimization; the other is about on-page search engine optimization.
So what do you need to know about off-page search engine optimization?
1) Decide what your keywords are going to be. I like to find words that get at least 1000 monthly searches online, and that there are no more than 5000 competitors vying for the same keyword. I find that if there are less than 5000, there are probably some open spots in the top ten results where I can fit into with just a little bit of hard work.
Note: In todays competitive environment online, it is better to find 10 keywords that have less competition than to find one that has steep competition, when trying to find keywords that will take you to the top. Generally, I like to find keywords for which there are only less than 5000 competing web sites and there are plenty left!
2) The next most important thing is getting backlinks from other web sites to your web sites, and that those backlinks have text anchors optimized for the keywords on your web page. Note: do not allow more than 80% of the text anchor backlinks to be exactly the same as each other.
So how do you get those backlinks?
There are a number of different ways to do it.
a) Exchange links with other web masters in your same field. Although this is an easy method, I do not like it, because over time, if some of the web sites to which you are linked, get dropped from the search engines, it can theoretically affect you negatively. I do not like outbound links on my site for that reason.
b) Write articles and submit them to article directories. There are probably 300+ article directories online that have positive page rank and that is all I look for. I know I might get some flak for that one but I have several #1 spots to prove my theory so I stand by it. Be sure and include text anchor links in each and every article some article directories permit as many as 3 links, so link them to 3 different pages that you are trying to get rankings for.
c) Submit your web address to each of at least 100 web directories online. This is a critical leg of your off-page optimization efforts.
The bottom line to all of this, is- you can do it you can do your own off-page optimization and do it in just a few hours of work per web page.
