There are a number of detox programs designed to suit different lifestyles. A few of them are juice fasting, herbal detoxification, detox baths/ saunas and bowel cleansing. Some detox programs may target only the liver and the kidneys, while others are suited for bowel or skin cleansing.
When undertaking a juice fasting detox program, you may only consume fruit or vegetable juices. It is considered to be more effective than water fasting, as juices are alkalizing and neutralize uric acid and other inorganic substances. Fruit and vegetable juices also provide an adequate quantity of vitamins and are light on the stomach.
Herbal detoxification involves the use of different herbs to cleanse the body. They may be in the form of powders or pills. Herbal tea leaves are also used in detoxification programs. For liver cleansing, dandelion root, red beet, parsleyand liverwort are used. Parsley, dandelion, goldenseal and cranberry are used to cleanse the kidneys.
Saunas and steam baths are used to cleanse the skin. They help to rid the body of pollutants that settle in the pores of the skin. Bowel cleansing is a great method to maintain good health. A high-fiber diet consisting of fruits and green, leafy vegetables act as a natural laxative.
There are many treatments used to detox the body. The most suitable program must be chosen after taking into account the overall health condition of an individual. At the end of a detox treatment, there are chances that fatigue and lethargy may be present. However, on the completion of such a program, a person should revert to normal dietary habits that the body needs for building tissue and muscle-power.
As needs often vary with time, so do individual detox programs. Cutting back on sugars, processed foods, caffeine and alcohol is a good thing, but it is best to consult a health care professional before embarking on a program.
