Do you remember Ezines?

For those who are new to the internet, an Ezine is an Electronic magaZINE that is delivered to your email in-box. There were and probably still are many different subjects that you could get an ezine for, from the humble Apple Pie to ZZ Top.

They were produced weekly or monthly and those of us subscribed to an edition looked forward to the next one. On most ezines you were allowed to submit your own small offering for admission into the next edition.

Some also had paid advertising. This was a great asset as the big ezines had a huge subscriber base and the person buying the advertising space new they had a captive audience.

What has made these popular ezines go into decline? What can have happened to put a halt to their popularity?

Something has taken over the job of the ezine. The name is Blog, or Web Blog to give it its full title. Web blogs have become so popular that most people on the Internet have at least one.

What is a Blog?

At its worst, it is putting down the jumbled thought that are in ones head. At its best a Blog can be as well laid out and structured as the best of the ezines.

How popular is blogging?

Blogging has taken off like a rocket into space over the past year or two, and judging by the 10 Page Rank of Blogger.com it continues to grow popular. However, most blogs are like the worst case scenario I mentioned. Some are just downright Porn site doorways. Whereas a few of the select top Blogs are such a good read that people are now subscribing to them like in the days of the ezine.

Technology though has changed and now instead of receiving emails you receive RSS feeds.

The vast difference between a Blog and an Ezine though seems to lie in two parts. The first is that unlike ezines you dont have paid advertising in a blog. That is not to say it can not be done, it is just a rare occurrence. Secondly, an owner of an ezine could control the recipient of his /her ezine by the use of subscriptions, and could tell at a glance just how popular their particular ezine is.

So, maybe there is still a place on the internet for the ezine. However, to keep pace with blogs and blogging, the humble ezine will have to re-invent and re-launch itself with a massive fanfare.

a) Leading self publishers usually carefully research the right non-competitive popular keywords to use in their content to attract huge targeted free traffic from search engines. First and foremost, you must submit your articles to the top article directories. The top two, in my opinion, are and GoArticles.com. The reason that this is so important is because many e-zine and web site owners turn to the best when searching for articles to publish. They know that these sites have strict guidelines and that the articles in their databases have been reviewed and are ready to publish.

Next, and not necessarily any less important, you really need to go out and find popular sites in your niche. If you notice that a popular site publishes articles written by others and they include the authors by-lines, then you should be e-mailing them. In the e-mail be sure to provide a link to some of your work. This link could be to your author bio from one of the big article sites that shows a list of all of your articles or it could be your own site.

Just by sending out an e-mail, you are showing that Webmaster that you have initiative and that you are determined. If your articles look good, in most cases, they will tell you that they would be happy to publish your articles.

Now lets discuss the advantages of getting published by authority web sites. Of course you will receive the obvious, high PR links to your site and hopefully some traffic from their viewers. What you may also receive is free traffic from their newsletter. Most major sites publish a weekly newsletter which may very well contain your articles. If the site abides the copyright laws, your signature block will also be in there. Getting your articles published in major newsletters can really boost your site visitors. There will be times where you notice a huge surge in traffic to your site. In most cases this is due to newsletter syndication.

Another huge advantage to article syndication is that your name will be out in the open. This will build a strong reputation and recognize you as a subject matter expert in your niche. This can be a huge advantage and it all starts just by sending out a few emails a day. Think of people like Willie Crawford, who is a well known Internet marketer. Willie can publish an article today and within a week that same article will be published on hundreds of different sites. The reason this happens is because Willie is known as a subject matter expert in the Internet marketing community.

So what are you waiting for? Start writing emails and grow your list of syndication prospects. If one rejects your offer dont worry about it, just try another. You may get rejected by 8 out of 10 web sites but thats still 2 that accepted your offer. Send out a few requests everyday and before you know it you will be published on several well known sites.

Ezine publishing is a great way to earn revenue online. As an Ezine publisher you can earn profits by selling ad space and/or selling subscriptions. The greatest advantage of Ezine advertising is that the audience is laser targeted. It is not uncommon for larger Ezines to rake in high six to seven figure yearly revenue.

There are many routes one can take when starting a successful Ezine publication. The common problem most people have is finding out exactly where to start. In this post Im going to outline where to begin as well as strategies to help you grow your Ezine into a success.

Pre Planning

Grab a pen and notepad and start brainstorming. Here are a few questions you need to answer.

1. What niche will your Ezine cover?

2. Who is your target audience?

3. How often will your Ezine be published?

4. Where will you generate content from?

5. How will you distribute your Ezine?

6. How will you generate subscriptions to your Ezine?

What niche will your Ezine cover?

Before you get started with your Ezine you need to identify the niche it will cover. You want to choose a niche you are very knowledgeable about. For example if I were to start an Ezine today it would be about making money on the internet. It is imperative that you choose a niche you are passionate about. Every step after this will be built upon your choice niche. Choose carefully because there is no changing your niche once you start building your Ezine.

Who is your target audience?

The success of your Ezine rests upon how accurately you define your target market. Your target audience has a direct effect on a number of choices you will make including artwork, content, advertising, etc. I suggest being specific as possible. Below I have compiled some questions that will help you narrow down your target audience.

What age group are you targeting? No more than 5 years apart.

What gender are you targeting?

What special interest do they all share?

What is the average salary you are targeting?

These are a few questions you can ask yourself to help you be as specific as possible. Challenge yourself to come up with more questions that will narrow down your audience even more.

How often will your Ezine be published?

Ezines are usually published Weekly, bi weekly, or monthly. When first starting your Ezine publication its a good idea to publish bi weekly to monthly. I always recommend monthly for the first six months. This gives you enough time to organize and take care of unforeseen problems. The worst case scenario for a new Ezine is to miss a publication. Whichever publishing schedule you choose be sure you can stick to it.

Where will your content be generated from?

Content is the backbone of your Ezine. There are different sources you can use in order to get content for your Ezine. The main point I want to stress is quality. You want your content to be of the greatest quality possible. If readers find they enjoyed the content there is a good chance they will be reading the next issue.

Article directories are a common source for many Ezines content. Some of these directories such as have hundreds of thousands of articles in their database that you may use as content. Even though many Ezines do it, I personally dont recommend this way. 99% of these articles are low quality. Many authors write these low quality articles for the sole purpose of generating traffic to their website. This usually results in rushed and not very informative articles. Another disadvantage is that many of these articles have already been recycled many times by other Ezine publications.

Writing your own content has always been the best way. You always want your content to be creative and have a distinct personality. Pasting together articles from random authors usually results in a lack of writing consistency. I suggest starting with a small team of great writers to help provide content. This is very useful because writing every article yourself can be very time consuming. Also you will still be able to publish your Ezine when you experience periods of writing blocks.

How will you distribute your Ezine?

Ezines are usually distributed to subscribers via email. You will need an auto responder to save and manage email lists. I use aweber.com for all my email list needs. However there are different formats you must consider when sending out your Ezine. Ive seen many Ezines send html code directly in the email. I strongly recommend not doing that. I prefer putting together a great .PDF and sending a link to the .PDF in the email. This is great because you can format the Ezine to your desire, and you get more control as far as graphics, layout designs, etc.

How will you generate subscriptions to your Ezine?

Generating subscriptions can be the most difficult task if you dont have a plan. There is always the advertising method, which can get a bit costly. If youre on a tight budget and cant afford advertising I suggest building traffic through great content. I would hold off on starting an actual Ezine until I got enough traffic to continuously generate subscriptions.

I suggest starting off with a blog. Buy your domain than install Wordpress.org on it. Start updating your blog everyday with great articles youve written for your niche. Sign up for social book marking websites such ass blogcatalog.com and mybloglog.com. Visit similar blogs and exchange links. You want to get your blog popular in the blogosphere of your niche. Commenting on similar blogs is a great way to start networking and generating targeted traffic to you blog. Make sure you update as much as possible with great content. This process may take 4-6 months before you start generating enough steady traffic to start publishing your Ezine.
